WC East Football Boosters
West Chester East Vikings Football
A History of Tradition, Rivalry, and Vikings Who Carry It Forward
West Chester East Football is rooted in something that can’t be measured only by wins and losses: community pride, enduring traditions, and generations of players who learn what it means to represent the “E” the right way.
The Beginning: 1973 and the Birth of the Vikings Program
West Chester East High School opened in 1973, created when the school district split the original West Chester program into two schools—and with that decision, a new football identity was born. The move wasn’t universally celebrated at the time, particularly by those who had built the old system, but it ultimately sparked one of the most recognized traditions in Chester County sports.
The earliest varsity years were challenging, especially against crosstown rival Henderson. Henderson won the first meeting and captured the first five matchups before East earned its first rivalry win in 1979—a milestone moment that helped define what Vikings football would become: resilient, relentless, and proud.
The Rivalry Years: A Community Tradition Takes Hold
From the beginning, West Chester East vs. West Chester Henderson grew into far more than a game. As the years passed, the rivalry became a civic tradition—one that brought students, alumni, and families back together season after season. In 2023, the programs met for the 68th time, with Henderson leading the all-time series 40–27 (at the time of publication).
For a long stretch, the rivalry’s most famous stage was the Thanksgiving morning game, when crowds packed West Chester University and the surrounding hillside. The tradition became so large that it was described as a community event on the scale of major local holiday gatherings. The final Thanksgiving edition of the rivalry was played in 2005, but its memories remain a defining chapter of Vikings football lore.
Building a Program: Early Leadership and the Coaching Tree
The Vikings’ first head coach was Jack Byrne, who led East in its earliest years and helped establish the foundation of the program. As the rivalry matured and the program grew, Byrne eventually transitioned into the athletic director role and hired Joe Carroll as head football coach—ushering in one of the most influential eras in program history.
That coaching lineage continues to echo across West Chester football. The rivalry history also notes how West Chester football’s “coaching tree” still branches through the area, with coaches and assistants moving across schools and building programs that remain intertwined.
Championship Chapters: 1995, 1998, and the 2003 “Banner Debate”
West Chester East has championship seasons that supporters still talk about decades later.
Under Joe Carroll, the Vikings won Ches-Mont League titles in 1995 and 1998, and the 1998 championship team featured a memorable group of Vikings, including Matt Schaub, John Timko, and Richie Boyd.
Then came 2003, a year still referenced in local football conversations because a teacher’s strike disrupted the normal structure of the season. East won the regular-season rivalry game, Henderson won on Thanksgiving, and to this day the season is remembered for the long-running (now mostly good-natured) debate over championship recognition and banners.
2006: A League Title and the End of a Signature Era
Another defining peak arrived in 2006, when the Vikings won the Ches-Mont again—Joe Carroll’s final season leading the program. The rivalry history credits that team being led by Freddie Maldonado, and it stands as one of the program’s landmark achievements.
The Modern Era: Breakthrough Season and Vikings Who Advanced the Tradition
In the modern era, one of the most celebrated seasons was 2019, when the Vikings posted a standout year at 9–3 overall, and undefeated in the Ches-Mont.
That run was powered by a dominant ground game and a senior running back who became one of the most recognizable names in recent Vikings football, Kyle Cichanowsky.
In the District 1 5A playoffs, West Chester East defeated Henderson 38–6, and during that game Cichanowsky surpassed 2,000 rushing yards on the season and scored 29 touchdowns. The achievement reflected not only the runner’s talent, but also the execution and effort of the entire unit—especially the offensive line.
Coaching Transition: 2025 and the Start of the Dean Owens Era
Following the 2024 season, Scott Stephen stepped down, and Dean Owens took over as head coach for the 2025 season.
With the leadership transition, the mission remains the same: build a program where players grow as teammates, competitors, and young men—while protecting the tradition that makes West Chester East Football what it is.
